What Senior Volunteer Work Can I Do As A Hobby?

There are many volunteer projects available to seniors. If you find an opportunity to volunteer, you can turn it into a hobby. You simply need to marry your favorite hobby up with a need.

Choose your favorite hobby

First, start by choosing your favorite hobby. Make a list of hobbies that you love to do and can afford to do without compensation. Very few places can afford to compensate you for materials or time, hence the term volunteer.

Practical Use

Now that you know what you want to do or create, make a list of who would be able to use the product. For instance, hospitals can use preemie clothes. Cancer clinics can use knitted caps. Nursing homes can always use quilts and afghans. Think of your skill and who would benefit from it.

Frequency

Once you know who and what, next comes the question of how much time it takes to create the item. You have to ask yourself how many you want to create and how often you want to do it. You will need to know how many items you can donate and how often. If your hobby is a skill, such as babysitting or repairs, you need to have an idea of how many hours and how many days a week or month you are willing to donate.

Contact
It’s time to make contact. Look up local places that you think would benefit from your item or skill. Call the facility and ask who your point of contact would be. Tell the contact what you have to offer and how often. Then stick to it. Facilities rely heavily on volunteers, so it’s important to stick to your word.

Friends

If you are embarking on a volunteer project, nothing is better than adding friends to it. Getting your friends involved will enable you to maximize what you can offer while spending quality time with those dear to you. The facility may even have other volunteer ideas for those friends that aren’t interested in the same hobbies as you.
