Does Medicare Cover Companion Care?

Medicare is a government healthcare system invoked by legislation in 1965. It makes medical coverage available for seniors 65 or older, those who are disabled, and people with renal failure. The program pays a portion of inpatient and outpatient healthcare costs for eligible individuals. However, Medicare will not pay all medical costs expenses, nor will it pay for long-term care.

Only Medical Expenses

Medicare does not pay for companion care, it only covers medical expenses. As an exception, the program will cover part of the expense of home health care when it is of short duration. Medicare also helps with skilled nursing care after a stay in the hospital. This is mostly nursing care, but can also involve assistance with routine custodial needs, such as eating, dressing, and bathing.

Most individuals receive Medicare Part A when they are 65, without paying a premium. Medicare Part A pays for inpatient care in a hospital or skilled nursing facility; it does not include custodial care. hospice care, and home health care. The program may cover a portion of the cost of home health care of short duration, under the following conditions:

• The home health care must be prescribed by a doctor
• The person must be recuperating from illness or injury.
• The patient must need skilled nursing care
• The home health care must be administered by a licensed nurse or therapist
